Lower Owens River Stomach Pump Sample on Wednesday January 3, 2024

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by an eight inch brown trout caught at gate 8 in the wild trout section of the lower Owens River on Wednesday January 3rd, 2024. It was caught at 1:30 P.M. on a size 12 stoner nymph fished on a three fly Euro rig.

Hydropsyche caddis nymphs, stick caddis – caddis case, caddis larvae, black fly larvae, a midge pupae and mayfly nymphs were found in this stomach sample. I believe the caddis larvae was in a rock case hence the two rocks in the sample.  Can you identify these aquatic insects? Check out the photo below for insect names and identification.

What fly pattern would you use? I would use a stoner nymph or a tan burlap caddis. Did you know the insects? How many different species did you identify?
