Hydropsyche caddis nymphs, mayfly nymphs, a mayfly adult, scuds and a stonefly nymph were found in this stomach sample. Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by an 8-inch brown trout caught in the upper section of Hot Creek Canyon on Sunday December 05, 2021. It was caught at 2:00 P.M. on a size 18 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymph fished on 5X tippet fished below a size 16 Adams parachute.

Hydropsyche caddis nymphs in a dark olive color make up the bulk of the sample.

Hydropsyche caddis nymphs was the most prevalent insect in the sample and the one I would imitate with a fly.

It was caught at the tell end of the blue wing olive hatch at 1:50 P.M. on a size 20 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymph fished on 5X tippet five feet below an indicator with a size 1 split shot a foot above the nymph,

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by a 10-inch brown trout caught at gate 11 on the lower Owens River at 11:00 A.M. This brown trout took a size 16 olive quilldigon. This trout was keyed in on baetis nymphs, but was feeding opportunistically on an ant and on baetis duns.

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by a 10-inch brown trout caught at gate 8 on the lower Owens River at 1:00 P.M. This brown trout took a size 16 Butano nymph. This trout was keyed in on baetis nymphs, but was feeding opportunistically on hydropsyche caddis and stick caddis.

This trout was feeding on beats nymphs, hydropsyche caddis and stick caddis.

The beats nymphs were a size 20 pheasant tail nymph for comparison.

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by a 11-inch rainbow trout caught at the confluence of the upper Owens River and Hot Creek in the early afternoon. This rainbow trout took a size 12 Morrish Hopper. This trout fed opportunistically on insects that floated in front of this trout.

This trout was feeding opportunistically on mayfly duns, mayfly nymphs, and a beetle.

This fish was feeding opportunistically on what ever floated down the river.

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by a 10-inch rainbow trout caught at Hot Creek interpretive site at 10:00 A.M. This rainbow trout took a size 24 trico spinner. The sample has a few olive mayfly nymphs, and mostly trico spinners.

Lower Owens River Stomach Sample from Thursday June 24, 2021

Today’s fish stomach sample is brought to you by a 10-inch brown trout caught in the lower Owens River below Pleasant Valley Reservoir Dam. This brown took a size 16 Butano nymph. This fish was caught at about 4:00 p.m. The sample has mayfly nymphs, and black fly larvae. This is a partial sample of the insect quantity taken with the stomach pump. All insects from the sample are represented in the dish.
